About Us

ACADEMICS

The Spelmore Institute is a full- time Day and Boarding school from Crèche to Year 11, catering for children aged between 2–16 years. All children are taught in mixed ability classes and our main language of instruction is English.

Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum used in UK schools, with international cultural enrichment; and on the IGCSE Examinations programs. (If requested, BECE exam preparation is optional).

We strive for academic excellence and personal development through engaging, student-centred teaching. Our small class sizes, high quality teaching and holistic learning environment help us to maintain high academic standards.

Our curriculum and our superb extra-curricular program gives a wide range of opportunities to develop students’ character, confidence and personal well-being.

EARLY  YEARS

Our Early Years stage includes the following classes: Crèche, Nursery and Reception.

Our Early Years curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework which sets out the seven areas of learning- including the 3 prime areas: communication and language; physical development; and personal, social and emotional development. The EYFS sets out the key development goals for children from birth to five years.

Children in the EYFS learn primarily through play and exploration, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. Learning through play helps young children get ready for school, encourages their imagination and promotes their literacy and numeracy skills. Both teaching and learning activities become more formal as the children progress through this stage.

PRIMARY

Our Primary Stage consists of the following classes: Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2); Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6)

Our Primary curriculum is based on the National Curriculum used in UK primary schools. English, Mathematics and Science are the core subjects and these dominate the school timetable.

To provide a broad and balanced curriculum, we include other foundation subjects: French, Computing, History, Geography, Art, Music, and Physical Education; and extracurricular subjects: Drama, Financial Literacy and African History.

We agree that “A good curriculum is one in which we address the physical, mental, spiritual, cultural and intellectual health of the child”, and that “Young people should learn to question and be encouraged to make a meaningful contribution throughout their lives for the good of us all.”

We believe that this blend of subjects creates a holistic approach to learning that provides opportunities for promoting children’s critical thinking, knowledge application; and for developing their self esteem, confidence and interests.

LOWER SECONDARY

Our Lower Secondary consists of the following classes: Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

Our Lower secondary curriculum is mainly based on the IGCSE Examinations courses at Key Stage 3 level. Subjects taught include: English (Language and Literature), Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, French, Computing, Art, Music and Physical Education.

Again, we include extracurricular subjects: Drama, Financial Literacy and African History.

(Additional BECE exam preparation is optional).

The Key Stage 3 curriculum has three core aims:
(i) to identify and overcome learning deficits and ensure that all students are fully prepared for a successful secondary education in terms of both their knowledge and their skills – The goal for them is ‘competence’ by the end of Year 7.
(ii) to encourage students to engage with the curriculum, to question and begin to express their preferences and interests- The goal for them is ‘confidence’ by the end of Year 8.
(iii) to enable students to delve for deeper levels of understanding in their main areas of interest in the curriculum subjects in Year 9, so that they feel ready to move to the next challenge of Key Stage 4 – The goal for them is ‘assurance’ by the end of Year 9.

UPPER SECONDARY

Our Upper Secondary consists of Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11)

We individualize Students’ learning so some students may progress to Key Stage 4 before the age of 15 in their strongest subjects.

The Key Stage Four Curriculum is designed to prepare our students for the future: whether higher study or work-based learning.

Students are prepared for IGCSE qualifications including the core English and Maths and Science. We allow students to select their choices for additional subjects, together with parents and teachers, according to their strengths and preferences.

Each student will be carefully guided through the range of examination courses on offer.
